The Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain (DSWA) was founded in 1968 in Kirkcudbrightshire, by the late Mrs Murray-Usher and the Stewartry Drystane Dyking Committee.  Since those early days, the Association has continued to expand and currently has over 1200 members in the UK and overseas. The Association was formed from many individual walling groups which, after the formation of DSWA, became branches of the organisation. The Stewartry Drystane Dyking Committee was one such group and in 1986 it formally became a branch of the DSWA and changed its name to the South West Scotland Branch of the DSWA. The branch is a registered Scottish Charity - SC 025830.

The Branch area is mainly Dumfries & Galloway though it has members from South Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire.

The Chairman resides in Kirkcudbright and the Secretary resides in Girvan.
